3 recalls across 2 model years
The Audi RS 4 has 3 recalls, all affecting 2007–2008 model years, and all involve frontal airbag inflators that can explode during deployment and send metal fragments into the cabin, posing a risk of serious injury or death to occupants.
All three recalls stem from the same class of Takata-style inflator defect. On 2007–2008 models, both the driver-side and passenger-side frontal airbag inflators can build excessive internal pressure during deployment and rupture, scattering metal fragments toward the driver and front passenger. The 2008 model year is covered by separate filings for both the driver and passenger inflators, while 2007 models are covered for the passenger-side inflator. Because the inflators can fail at the moment the airbag is supposed to protect occupants in a crash, the system intended to reduce injury becomes the source of it.
