The BMW 323iT has 1 recall covering 2000-2005 model years, where the passenger-side frontal airbag inflator can rupture explosively and send metal fragments into the cabin, causing serious injury or death. This is part of the widespread Takata airbag recall affecting vehicles equipped with non-desiccated passenger frontal inflators containing phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate propellant. Over time, this propellant can degrade, causing the inflator to burst with far more force than intended when the airbag deploys. The resulting metal fragments can travel through the cabin and strike the driver or passengers. Because propellant degradation tends to worsen with age, humidity exposure, and temperature cycling, older vehicles in this range are of particular concern.
