BMW 328d Recalls

The BMW 328D has 8 recalls covering 2013 through 2018, with the most serious being an exhaust gas recirculation cooler defect on 2013-2018 models where internal leaking causes coolant to mix with diesel soot, potentially melting the intake manifold and starting an engine fire.

The EGR cooler fire risk spans the full production run of the 328D and was addressed through multiple repair attempts over several years. A related but narrower filing covers 2018 models specifically, where the same internal coolant leak can produce smoldering particles before the manifold fully ignites. Both describe the same underlying hazard.

The 2014-2018 model years also have a high-pressure fuel pump that can fail while driving, cutting engine power and stalling the vehicle without warning.

On the safety equipment side, 2014 models have a driver-side airbag inflator that can rupture explosively and send metal fragments into the cabin. The 2014-2015 model years have a separate side curtain airbag inflator that can also rupture, sending fragments either into or out of the vehicle.

Going back to earlier production, 2013-2016 xDrive models have a constant-velocity joint connecting the transfer case to the rear driveshaft that can wear and fail, cutting power to the rear wheels and affecting vehicle stability. The 2014-2015 model years have a side marker light that can stop illuminating, reducing the vehicle's visibility to other drivers at night.
