10 recalls across 11 model years
The BMW 525i has 10 recalls spanning 1995 through 2011, with the most serious being a positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve heater that can short circuit and melt surrounding components, creating a fire risk even when the vehicle is parked and off, affecting 2006 and 2007–2011 model years.
The PCV valve fire risk spans two overlapping year ranges: 2006 models and then 2007–2011 models, with the same underlying failure mode across both. On the airbag side, 2002–2003 models face a driver-side airbag inflator that can rupture in a crash and send metal fragments into the cabin. A separate but related inflator issue affects 2000–2003 models where the original steering wheel was replaced with the optional sport steering wheel, carrying the same risk of metal fragments striking the driver or passengers during deployment. The 2006 model year also has a passenger seat sensor recall affecting vehicles with Sport Seat or standard seat configurations: if the sensor fails, the front passenger airbag can be deactivated in a crash, leaving that occupant without protection.
Going back to earlier production, 2002 models with standard (non-sport) suspension and specific Continental tires may have had the outer sidewall cut during factory mounting, which can cause slow pressure loss, handling problems, and potential loss of control. Also on 2002 models, a front strut can separate from its upper mount when the suspension is fully unloaded, affecting steering and vehicle control. The 2001 model year has an electronically controlled engine cooling fan that can fail, causing the engine to overheat and sustain damage. The 1995 model year has a door double-lock feature that can trap occupants inside the vehicle with no way to exit through the doors or windows.
