The BMW 540iA has 1 recall covering the 1999 model year, where premature wear of the automatic transmission's ring gear can cause the loss of first, second, third, and reverse gears, leaving the vehicle unable to move normally or back up. The affected vehicles are equipped with a 5HP24 automatic transmission. As the ring gear wears, the transmission progressively loses the ability to engage multiple forward gears and reverse, which can leave the driver stranded or unable to maneuver in tight spaces.
