5 recalls across 5 model years
The BMW 640i has 5 recalls spanning the 2012–2019 production run, with the most serious being a Takata airbag inflator on 2015 models that can rupture and send metal fragments into the cabin, raising the risk of serious injury or death.
The 2017 model year has a separate airbag concern: the seat-mounted side airbag inflator initiator can fail to ignite, leaving the bag undeployed in a crash. On 2018–2019 models, the backup camera can fail to display an image when reversing, removing rear visibility the driver would otherwise rely on to avoid a collision.
Going back to 2012, a fuel pump wiring connector can loosen, melt, and cause a fuel leak, and if the pump stops working entirely, the engine can stall without warning. The 2012 recall is the only year of the 640i's production run affected by this fuel system issue.
