The BMW ActiveE has 2 recalls covering the 2011-2012 model years, with the most serious affecting 2011 vehicles where the drivetrain housing can fail to seal properly, starving the gear shaft of lubrication until the connection between the electric motor and transmission wears out and drive power cuts off without warning. The second recall covers 2011-2012 models and involves the electric power steering system, where fluctuations in electrical current can cause steering assistance to drop out suddenly, requiring significantly more physical effort to steer and raising the risk of losing directional control.
