Summary
The BMW i4 has 5 recalls covering 2022 through 2025, with the most serious being a cracked left-side longitudinal beam on 2024 models that can reduce chassis rigidity and allow the high-voltage battery to sustain damage in a crash, raising the risk of fire.
Two structural recalls affect 2024 models. Beyond the longitudinal beam issue, a separate beam supporting the left rear wheel arch can also be cracked on 2024 vehicles, similarly weakening the body structure and raising fire and injury risk in a crash. On the battery side, 2022-2023 models have a high-voltage battery where the cell modules may not have been assembled correctly, putting stress on the module frame that can cause it to fail and cut drive power without warning. This same assembly concern extends to 2022-2025 production across related BMW models, but for the i4 specifically, the affected range is 2022-2023. There is also a software issue on 2022 models where the electric drive motor can trigger a fail-safe mode and cut power to the wheels; the driver will see a warning light and message, but the sudden loss of drive power raises the risk of a crash. Rounding out the recall history, 2022-2023 i4 eDrive40 and M50 models have a body control software defect that can prevent the doors from locking while the vehicle is moving, leaving them vulnerable to swinging open in a crash.
