13 recalls across 3 model years
The BMW i7 has 13 recalls covering 2023 through 2025 model years, with the most serious being a brake system defect on 2023-2025 vehicles where the integrated brake system can malfunction, reducing power brake assist and causing the anti-lock brakes and stability control to stop working, extending stopping distances and reducing the driver's ability to maintain control.
The 2024 model year has a related but separate stability control module issue where rear brake function can drop out alongside anti-lock and stability control, again lengthening stopping distances and reducing handling response.
On the electric drivetrain side, 2023-2024 models are subject to two overlapping drive power concerns: a software fault in the electric motor controller can shut down the high-voltage system without warning, and a physical assembly problem in the high-voltage battery cell modules can cause the battery to fail and cut drive power entirely. Either condition can leave the vehicle without propulsion in traffic. The 2023 model year alone has an additional battery software issue where the battery control unit can interrupt electrical power and cause a sudden loss of drive.
Several 2023-specific recalls affect occupant protection and driver assistance. Vehicles equipped with the Executive Lounge Seating Package can have a front passenger seat computer that fails to recognize the seat position, disabling the front airbag, knee airbag, and active headrest so none deploy in a crash. Separately, some 2023 front seats were not welded correctly at the length adjustment mechanism, which can prevent the seat from properly restraining an occupant in a crash. The hands-on detection system on 2023 models can fail to sense when the driver removes their hands from the wheel, preventing the emergency stopping assistant from activating if the driver becomes incapacitated. The same hands-on detection issue extends into 2023-2024 models due to a grounding connection that may not have been attached correctly at the steering wheel.
The 2023 model year also has a cluster of electrical and visibility issues. The Interaction Bar on the dashboard can fail to activate windshield defrost or hazard warning lights, and the control buttons may not illuminate when pressed, reducing visibility and making the vehicle harder for others to see. The windshield wipers can fail in certain weather conditions, further reducing forward visibility. The telematics unit on 2023 vehicles may not transmit the vehicle's location to emergency responders after a crash, which can delay assistance.
