7 recalls across 5 model years
The BMW i8 has 7 recalls spanning the 2014–2020 production run, with the most serious recent issue being a 2020 model year hybrid battery defect where debris inside the battery cells can cause a short circuit and fire.
The 2019 model year has two separate issues. A circuit board fault in the electric motor electronics module can cut high-voltage power without warning, causing the vehicle to lose propulsion while driving. There is also a recall covering the TurboCord Portable Charger supplied with 2019 vehicles, where capacitors inside the charger can fail and create a shock hazard or start a fire during charging.
Going back to the 2017 model year, a seat-mounted airbag inflator initiator can fail to ignite, leaving the side airbag inert in a crash. The 2015 model year has a stability control hydraulic unit with improperly drilled internal passages that can restrict brake piston movement, impairing both stability control and braking performance.
The 2014 model year has a fuel system grounding issue where a bolt attaching the ground cable to the fuel tank was not reliably secured, which can allow fuel to leak. In the presence of any ignition source, that leak raises the risk of a fire.
