5 recalls across 4 model years
The BMW M235i has 5 recalls spanning 2014 to 2021, with the most serious being airbag inflator defects on 2014-2015 models where a ruptured inflator can send sharp metal fragments into the cabin or out of the vehicle, raising the risk of injury to occupants and bystanders.
Two separate inflator issues affect 2014-2015 models: one involves the side and window airbags broadly, and a second targets the head airbag specifically, where the inflator can fail at a weld joint, leaking propellant gas or rupturing outright. Both carry the same fragment-projection risk. Also on 2014 models, the fuel pump can fail without warning, cutting engine power and stalling the vehicle in traffic.
The 2021 model year has two issues. On certain 2021 vehicles including the M235i xDrive Gran Coupe, a seat belt retractor can fail to function correctly in a crash, reducing the restraint it provides to the occupant. The 2020-2021 M235i xDrive also has a sunroof that can continue closing after the ignition is switched off or the key is locked, posing a pinch or entrapment risk to anyone with a hand or head in the opening at that moment.
