7 recalls across 5 model years
The BMW M240i has 7 recalls covering 2018 through 2023 model years, with the most serious recent issue affecting 2023 vehicles where the second-row seat backrest cover panels can break during side airbag deployment, causing the airbag to inflate incorrectly and raising the risk of injury to rear-seat occupants.
On 2021 models, two separate safety system issues appear. The seatbelt retractor can fail to function correctly in a crash, reducing the restraint the belt provides. Separately, supports within the roof liner can detach and fall into the passenger compartment, which becomes particularly dangerous if the head airbag deploys in a crash. Also on 2021 models, the knee airbag assemblies for both driver and passenger were sometimes improperly folded during manufacturing, which can cause them to deploy incorrectly in a crash. That same knee airbag folding issue extends back to 2019-2020 model years as well.
The 2023 model year also has a software issue where the windows or sunroof can close on their own without the key present, which can trap an occupant inside.
Going back to 2018, the instrument panel display can fail to illuminate properly at startup or while driving, hiding warning symbols from the driver. There is also a crankshaft sensor firmware issue on 2018 models that can prevent the sensor from correctly reading engine speed, potentially causing the engine to stall unexpectedly while driving.
