13 recalls across 9 model years
The BMW M4 has 13 recalls spanning 2014 through 2026, with the most serious recent issue affecting 2026 models where a loose positive battery cable connection can stall the engine without warning or start a fire in the engine compartment.
On 2021 models, two separate safety systems can fail in a crash: the front seat belt retractors may not lock properly, reducing restraint, and the anti-lock brake system can lose function along with reduced brake assist, both of which raise the risk of a crash. Also on 2021 models, the electronic brake booster can fail, further reducing braking performance.
The 2019-2020 model years have driver and passenger knee airbags that were improperly folded during assembly and may not deploy correctly in a crash. On 2020 models specifically, fuel injectors installed without a vibration-damping component can eventually damage the connection between the fuel line and the fuel rail, creating a fuel leak and fire risk.
Going back to 2018, the M4 Convertible has front seat belt retractors built with incompatible locking mechanism housings that may not hold the occupant during a crash. The 2017 model year has seat-mounted side airbag inflators that can fail to ignite, leaving occupants without side airbag protection in a collision.
The 2016-2017 model years have a driveshaft-to-flange connection that can fail and cut power to the rear wheels. On 2015-2016 models, a driveshaft slip-joint that was not filled with grease can seize and also cause a sudden loss of drive. A separate issue on 2015-2016 vehicles involves rear subframe bolts that may have been reused during a prior service procedure rather than replaced; these bolts can loosen over time and compromise handling.
The 2014-2015 model years are covered by two Takata airbag recalls. Side and window airbag inflators on 2014-2015 vehicles can rupture and send metal fragments into the cabin, and the driver's frontal airbag inflator on 2014 models can explode with enough force to injure or kill occupants.
