4 recalls across 1 model year
The BMW R1100S has 4 recalls, all affecting the 1999 model year, with the most serious being a fuel system defect where an engine backfire during starting can loosen a throttle body, damage the fuel line or injector on the right side of the engine, and allow raw fuel to spray out. A separate fuel concern on these same 1999 models involves the fuel hose chafing against the rigid feed and return lines running from the fuel distributor, which can wear through the hose and cause a fuel leak. On the braking side, incorrect thread-locking compound applied during assembly can allow the rear brake linkage ball end to gradually work loose and detach, leaving the rear brake inoperable. There is also a steering concern where the handlebar mounting brackets may fit imprecisely in the upper fork clamps, which can allow the handlebars to shift position during operation and reduce steering control.
