4 recalls across 4 model years
The Chevrolet 5500XD has 4 recalls covering 2019-2022 model years, with the most serious being a suspension and steering joint defect on 2021-2022 vehicles where hex flange lock nuts can break, causing steering instability and raising the risk of a crash.
On 2019-2020 models, rear outer wheel lug nuts may not have been properly tightened at the factory, allowing them to loosen over time until a wheel separates from the vehicle while driving. The 2020 model year also has a separate issue where U-bolt nuts securing the rear axle can loosen, letting the axle shift out of alignment and causing the driveshaft to separate, which cuts power to the rear wheels and can stall the vehicle. Also on 2020 models, certain vehicles equipped with a dual-mode belt locking mechanism have front seatbelt webbing that may not properly restrain an occupant in a crash.
