Chevrolet Volt Recalls

The Chevrolet Volt has 8 recalls spanning the 2011–2019 production run, with the most serious being a 2013 model year driver-side airbag inflator that can rupture during deployment and send metal fragments into the cabin, posing a risk of serious injury or death.

The 2018–2019 model years share two recalls. Rear seatbelt retractors on those vehicles may not lock when the belt is fully extended, which can prevent a child safety seat from being properly anchored in a crash. Separately, rear brake caliper pistons on 2018–2019 models can develop internal gas pockets that reduce braking force at the rear wheels.

Going back to mid-production years, 2016 models have a driver's frontal airbag that can over-inflate during the second stage of deployment in a high-speed crash, raising the risk of injury rather than reducing it. On 2015 models, an inner tie rod may not be torqued to specification and can separate from the steering gear, causing a sudden loss of steering. The 2013 model year also has a hybrid powertrain control module software issue that can disable battery cell balancing, drop the pack voltage, and cut propulsion while driving.

Going further back, 2012 models have a brake pressure modulator valve that fails to release pressure from the front brakes during anti-lock braking, stability control, or traction control events, which can cause the front wheels to lock and extend stopping distances. On 2011–2013 models, if the driver exits without switching off the electrical system, the high-voltage battery can drain low enough that the gasoline engine starts automatically to recharge it; if this happens in an enclosed space, carbon monoxide can accumulate.
