1993 Dodge Dakota

The 1993 Dodge Dakota has two recalls, both addressing the same brake defect: an undersized valve inside the anti-lock brake system that can fail during hard braking on slippery roads, causing the front wheels to lock up and extending stopping distances.

On vehicles equipped with anti-lock brakes, the hydraulic control unit contains a brake return check valve that may be too small for the system. During hard braking on wet or low-traction surfaces, the valve can stick in a continuous return position, which disables the front anti-lock brake function. When that happens, the brake pedal may feel soft or travel further than normal, and the ABS warning light may come on. With front anti-lock braking defeated, the front wheels can lock during a hard stop, reducing the driver's ability to steer around an obstacle while braking.
