Summary
The Dodge Sprinter 3500 has 6 recalls spanning 2003 through 2009, with the most serious affecting 2008 models where the left rear axle shaft can fracture, cutting drive power to the rear wheels and raising the risk of a crash depending on traffic and road conditions.
The 2009 model year has an engine oil leak risk where a spring plate at the oil filler neck can crack, allowing oil to drip into the engine compartment. That leak can starve the engine of lubrication and leave oil on the road surface, creating a hazard for other vehicles. Also on 2008 models, vehicles fitted with the optional three-row bench seat may have second-row seatbelts that were built to European standards rather than Canadian requirements, with an incorrectly mounted load limiter that cannot withstand crash forces specified by regulation.
On the 2007 model year, two separate issues exist. The crankshaft sensor on vehicles with the 3.0L diesel can fail and cause the engine to stall without warning, removing propulsion in traffic. There is also a brake fluid reservoir concern on some 2007 examples assembled with a smaller reservoir intended for the 2500 model rather than the 3500, which does not match the vehicle's certification.
Going further back, 2003 through 2006 models have an instrument cluster that fails to illuminate the brake warning lamp during the startup bulb-check sequence. Because the lamp never cycles on at startup, a driver has no way to confirm it is functional and may not realize it is dark if an actual brake system fault develops.
