The FIAT X1/9 has 4 recalls covering the 1974 and 1979 model years, with the most serious affecting 1979 vehicles where axle shaft bolts at the differential and rear wheel hubs can work loose and allow the axle shafts to detach while driving, causing a sudden loss of drive and potential crash. The other 1979 recall involves carburetor vapor lock: when restarting a hot engine and pulling away, gasoline can vaporize in the carburetor's upper channel and cause the engine to hesitate or stumble. There is also a compliance issue on 1979 models where the instrument cluster is calibrated in miles rather than kilometers, which does not meet Canadian safety standards for instrument labeling. Going back to the earliest production year, 1974 models have a recall for an accelerator cable that may have been incorrectly installed, which can cause the throttle to behave unpredictably.
