The FIAT X1/9 has 4 recalls covering the 1974-1979 production run, the most serious being a 1979 model year defect where under-torqued bolts on the axle shafts can loosen and allow a shaft to separate from the differential or rear wheel hub, causing a sudden loss of drive and a crash without warning.
The 1979 model year also has a carburetor issue where fuel can vaporize in an upper channel after the engine has been running, causing hesitation or stumbling when restarting and pulling away while the engine is still hot. A compliance recall also affects certain 1979 models whose instrument clusters were calibrated in miles rather than kilometers, putting them out of conformance with Canadian safety standards.
