GMC CABALLERO Recalls

The GMC Caballero has 5 recalls spanning the 1978-1982 production run, with the most serious being a wheel disc cracking defect on 1981 models equipped with heavy-duty wheels, where the disc can fracture and allow the tire and a portion of the wheel to separate from the vehicle while driving, causing loss of control. The 1978 model year carries an equally serious chassis defect: a small retaining clip inside the rear differential can dislodge, allowing the axle shaft, wheel, and brake drum to pull free from the vehicle when cornering forces are applied. On 1982 models, the outboard headlamp wiring connectors were installed with incorrect orientation, causing the high and low beam filaments to illuminate in the wrong mode and reducing forward visibility at night. The 1978 and 1979 model years each have a compliance recall related to exhaust emissions standards under Canadian regulations.
