5 recalls across 3 model years
The GMC Envoy XL has 5 recalls covering the 2002–2006 production run, with the most serious being a 2003 driver's airbag defect where the inflator can fracture and send fragments into the cabin, and where the airbag may also fail to deploy fully in a crash.
The 2006 model year carries two lighting and electrical concerns. Moisture can enter the driver's door master power window switch, corrode the circuit board, and cause a short that can start a fire even with the vehicle parked and unattended. Separately, the headlamps on 2006 models can fail to illuminate, reducing the driver's forward visibility and making the vehicle harder for oncoming traffic to see.
Going back to the 2002 model year, vibration and heat can loosen the tail lamp and stop lamp bulbs in their sockets, causing them to flicker or go dark and leaving following drivers without a braking warning. There is also a rear side door latch issue on 2002 vehicles that were operated in Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador, where road salt and water can corrode the latch mechanism so that the door either fails to latch or fails to release properly, and an unlatched door can swing open while driving.
