36 recalls across 19 model years
The GMC Sierra 2500 has 36 recalls spanning 2007 through 2026, with the most serious recent issue being a 2024 model year steering gear shaft that can fracture and disconnect from the steering arm, causing a total loss of steering control.
The 2024 model also has a power-unlatching tailgate whose electronic release switch can short circuit from water intrusion and open while driving, spilling cargo onto the road. The 2026 model has a recall for a missing or incomplete owner's manual.
Several recalls cluster around the 2020-2022 era. On diesel-equipped 2020-2022 models, a transmission control valve can fail and lock up the rear wheels without warning. A prior repair attempt for this issue on some 2020 models did not fully resolve the problem. On 2021-2022 models, loose bolts on the brake pressure modulator valve can allow water inside, creating a short circuit and fire risk. The 2020 model year has a hood latch striker wire that can fracture and let the hood fly open while driving, a seatbelt pretensioner that can vent hot gas onto the carpet and start a fire, and a roof-rail airbag diffuser that can separate during deployment and reduce airbag effectiveness. Power-unlatching tailgates on 2020-2024 models share the same water-intrusion short circuit issue as the 2024 recall. Seatbelt anchor bolts on 2020-2021 models may not be properly secured at the front center seating position, and a mismatched spare tire on 2020-2021 models can prevent the anti-lock brake system from controlling the rear wheels independently.
Going back to the 2017-2019 range, diesel-equipped models with an optional engine block heater cord can develop an electrical short circuit in the cable or terminals, raising the risk of fire. The rear fuel tank on 2017-2019 dual-tank models can collapse and cut off fuel transfer, stalling the engine. Roof-rail airbag inflators on 2018-2019 Crew Cab models can rupture or shed an end cap into the cabin. Front seatbelt retractors on 2017-2018 models were built with the wrong torsion bar and may not perform correctly in a crash.
The 2015-2016 model years have two brake pedal recalls where a loose pivot nut can make the pedal inoperative or cause it to interfere with the accelerator. Roof-rail airbag inflators on 2015-2016 models share the same end cap and rupture risk as later years. Front airbag and seatbelt pretensioner deployment failures on 2015-2017 models can leave occupants without restraint protection in a crash.
Takata passenger frontal airbag inflators affect a wide span of earlier production. On 2009-2014 models originally sold or registered in high-humidity states and territories, the inflator can explode and send metal fragments into the cabin. The 2007-2008 model years have two separate frontal airbag concerns: the original Takata inflator rupture risk, and a subsequent recall for replacement inflators that also used ammonium nitrate propellant and carry the same fragmentation danger. The 2009-2014 model years also have an optional fire extinguisher that may fail to discharge properly in an emergency.
