The GMC Topkick C6 has 3 recalls spanning the 1985-2001 production run, with the most serious being a 2001 model year fuel system defect where reversed mounting bolts on the fuel filter housing point toward the left fuel tank and can pierce it in a frontal collision, spilling fuel and creating a fire risk.
The 1998 model year, on vehicles equipped with air brakes and anti-lock braking, has an electrical harness that can chafe and short to ground, cutting off the anti-lock brake function. The foundation brakes continue to work, but the loss of anti-lock control raises the risk of wheel lockup during hard stops. Going back to the earliest production, 1985 models have fuel return hoses that may be improperly connected between the switching valve and the fuel tank sending units, which can cause fuel to overflow and leak, again creating a fire hazard.
