The GMC W4 has 1 recall affecting the 1997 model year, where the front axle brake hoses can leak fluid, reducing braking effectiveness and increasing stopping distances. The hoses were damaged during transport of the front axle assembly before installation, meaning the weakness was present from the time the vehicle was built. A brake fluid leak at the front axle reduces the hydraulic pressure available to the front brakes, which can noticeably lengthen the distance needed to bring the vehicle to a stop.
