6 recalls across 11 model years
The Harley-Davidson FLHR Road King has 6 recalls spanning 2008 through 2022, with the most serious being a clutch defect on 2017-2018 models where the clutch can fail to disengage, making it impossible to separate the engine from the drivetrain and causing loss of control.
The 2017 model year also has an oil cooler line that can detach if a clamp was installed incorrectly, dumping engine oil suddenly onto the rear tire and causing it to lose traction. On 2014 ABS-equipped models, a pinched front brake line can build excess fluid pressure and lock the front wheel without warning.
The 2020-2022 Touring models have a software error that causes the brake lights to illuminate when the rider has not touched the brakes, which can confuse following drivers and raise the risk of a rear-end collision. Going back to 2014-2015 models, saddlebag mounting hardware can fail to hold the bags securely, allowing one to separate from the motorcycle and become a road hazard for other vehicles.
On 2008-2011 ABS-equipped models, deposits can build up inside the anti-lock brake hydraulic control unit and cause an internal valve to stick, reducing braking effectiveness.
