8 recalls across 10 model years
The Harley-Davidson FLHXSE has 8 recalls spanning 2010 through 2024, with the most serious recent issue affecting 2024 models where a voltage regulator wire can chafe against the crankcase, short out, and cause sudden loss of both electrical power and drive power while riding.
The 2023 model year has two separate concerns. At certain high speeds, particularly on rough roads or in wind gusts, the engine control module can cause the motorcycle to react unexpectedly and become difficult to steer. Separately, the rear brake line on 2023 models may not be properly secured, allowing it to rub against the exhaust pipe, wear through, and leak brake fluid, reducing stopping ability.
On 2017-2018 models, the clutch can fail to fully disengage while the engine is running and the bike is in gear, causing unexpected forward movement. The same clutch disengagement problem appeared on 2014-2015 models as well, with the same risk of the motorcycle moving without warning.
The 2020-2022 model years have a software error that causes the brake lights to illuminate even when the rider is not braking, which can confuse following drivers. Going back to 2015, saddlebags on certain models can separate from the motorcycle while riding and become a road hazard. On 2010 models equipped with anti-lock brakes, deposits can cause a valve inside the ABS hydraulic control unit to stick, reducing braking effectiveness.
