3 recalls across 3 model years
The Harley-Davidson Softail (FL) has 3 recalls spanning 1989 to 2005, with the most serious being a rear brake pedal defect on 1998 models where a faulty weld can allow the lever hub to separate from the master cylinder lever, causing rear braking to fail without any warning.
A separate recall covering 1989 models involves the starter relay, which can short internally and ignite surrounding components, creating a fire risk on the motorcycle. On 2005 models, the fuel shut-off valve can be assembled with its ON and RESERVE positions reversed, meaning a rider who believes the valve is drawing from the main fuel supply is actually drawing from the reserve, which can leave them with less fuel range than expected and no true reserve when needed.
