3 recalls across 2 model years
The Harley-Davidson Softail (FX) has 3 recalls spanning 1989 through 1995, with the most serious affecting 1989 models where the positive battery cable can chafe against the oil tank, short circuit, and start a fire on the motorcycle.
The 1989 model year has a second electrical issue tied to a prior repair attempt: replacement battery cables installed to address the chafing problem can themselves fail, cutting power to the ignition, lights, and accessories while riding. On 1995 models equipped with vacuum-operated fuel valves, using reformulated fuel containing MTBE while starting the motorcycle with the fuel valve in the "off" position can disrupt the valve's diaphragm, causing unpredictable fuel flow and unexpected engine shutdown.
