3 recalls across 2 model years
The Harley-Davidson Softail (FX) has 3 recalls covering 1989 and 1995 model years, the most serious being a 1989 battery cable that can chafe against the oil tank, short circuit, and start a fire on the motorcycle.
The 1989 model year has a second electrical recall tied to the repair for the first: replacement battery cables installed as part of the chafing fix can themselves fail, cutting power to the ignition, lights, and accessories while riding. On 1995 models equipped with vacuum-operated fuel valves, using reformulated fuel containing MTBE and starting the motorcycle with the fuel valve in the off position can disrupt the valve's diaphragm, causing unpredictable fuel delivery and unexpected engine shutdown.
