The Harley-Davidson Softail Standard (FXST) has 1 recall affecting the 1986 model year, where a transmission shifter fork can fracture without warning, causing the transmission to malfunction and potentially locking the rear wheel, which can throw the rider into a crash with no chance to react. When the shifter fork breaks, the transmission can seize mid-ride, sending an abrupt lock to the rear wheel rather than allowing it to spin freely. On a motorcycle, a sudden rear wheel lockup at speed leaves little margin to recover control.
