Summary
The Mazda Miata has 7 recalls spanning the 1990–2001 production run, with the most serious affecting 1995 models where minor undercarriage impacts can trigger airbag deployments unexpectedly. On 2001 models, the fog light bulb socket can be improperly seated, allowing vibration to work the socket and wiring harness loose from the fog light housing over time. The 1999 model year has two fuel system recalls: the fuel injector wiring harness can contact the exhaust gas recirculation pipe, wear through, and blow a fuse that cuts power to the injectors, stalling the engine; separately, a fuel filler valve can stick and cause fuel to spit back at the pump nozzle during refueling. Going back to 1990 production, there is a recall for the optional hardtop hoist accessory kit, where the plastic buckle on the hoist can break after the hardtop is hung, dropping it on anyone nearby. Two additional 1990 recalls are compliance-related: the catalytic converter can fail from vibration, and the daytime running lights shut off completely when the turn signal is activated rather than dimming as required.
