5 recalls across 3 model years
The Mazda MX-5 Miata has 5 recalls spanning 2006 through 2024, with the most serious being a software defect on 2016 models where the driver and passenger front airbags can deploy with excessive force in a crash, raising the risk of occupant injury from the airbags themselves. Also on 2016 models, a separate software problem in the automatic transmission can trigger a sudden unexpected downshift, causing the rear wheels to slow sharply and the vehicle to lose stability. A third issue on 2016 models involves an underbody cover bracket that is not fully welded and can detach while driving, becoming a hazard for other traffic. On the 2024 model year, a software fault in the stability control unit can prevent the traction control and stability control warning lights from illuminating, leaving the driver unaware when either system has a problem. Going back to the 2006 model year, a bolt securing the horn assembly to the steering wheel hub can fail during airbag deployment in very cold temperatures, allowing the horn assembly to break loose and strike occupants.
