4 recalls across 4 model years
The Mercedes-Benz 300 has 4 recalls spanning 1978 to 1990, with the most serious being a potential fire risk on 1990 models where heat from the auxiliary fan pre-resistor can melt and ignite its plastic cover while the engine is running. The 1987 model year has a separate engine concern: the throttle cable bushing can fatigue from heat exposure, break, and cause the engine to drop to idle unexpectedly, leaving the driver without accelerator response. On 1986 models equipped with a supplemental restraint system, a loose electrical connector at the airbag module can prevent the airbag from deploying in a crash. Going back to 1978, a crankshaft pulley on certain engines can split at its two halves, which cuts power to the power steering pump and makes the steering noticeably heavier to operate.
