17 recalls across 5 model years
The Mercedes-Benz AMG CLS53 has 17 recalls covering the 2019–2021 model years, with the most serious being a transmission wiring harness defect across all three model years where a misrouted or incorrectly repaired connector can corrode, short-circuit, and start a fire.
That fire risk appears in two related recalls: one covering the original production wiring and a second covering vehicles where a prior repair attempt introduced the same incorrect wiring, meaning some 2019–2021 examples may have been through a repair that did not fully resolve the issue. A separate 2021-only recall covers a 48-volt ground cable in the engine compartment that can overheat if its connection was not properly tightened, also raising the risk of fire.
On the occupant protection side, 2021 models have several safety system concerns. Side crash sensor connectors can work loose and delay airbag and seatbelt deployment in a side impact. The seatbelt pretensioners and the pre-crash tensioning system can fail to activate in a crash. Rear seatbelt retractors can deactivate too early, preventing a child safety seat from locking in place securely. The 2021 infotainment software can cause the backup camera display to go black or restart, removing rear visibility when reversing.
The 2019 model year carries its own set of issues. A software defect can cause the engine to stall while driving. The automatic emergency braking radar can fail to apply braking as expected in a potential collision. The seatbelt pretensioners and pre-crash safety functions may not deploy in a crash. The rearview camera can fail to display an image due to a software error, a problem that also extends through 2020 models. The 2019 headlights have an improperly sealed horizontal adjustment screw that can allow the aim to shift, reducing forward visibility at night.
Across all three model years, the emergency call system can fail to connect to a response center or transmit an inaccurate vehicle location after a crash, potentially delaying emergency responders. A 48-volt battery issue on 2019–2021 vehicles can disable safety features including hazard lights, automatic door locks, and the emergency call system. On 2021 models with a heated leather steering wheel, a hands-off detection fault can disable the driver attention warning and the automatic emergency stop function within the adaptive cruise system.
