20 recalls across 5 model years
The Mercedes-Benz AMG GLE53 has 20 recalls across the 2021–2024 model years, with the most serious being a 48-volt ground connection under the passenger seat that can overheat on 2021–2024 vehicles, creating a fire risk inside the cabin.
A related wiring issue affects 2021–2022 models, where a ground cable bolt for the same 48-volt connection under the front passenger seat can work loose, allowing the cable to overheat and catch fire. On 2021 models specifically, loose ground connection bolts on the passenger-side electric heater can cause the wiring to overheat with the same result, and incorrectly installed air conditioner drain hoses can allow water to pool in the footwells, corroding electrical components or causing a short circuit that leads to fire.
The 2024 model year has a separate concern: the accelerator pedal module bracket can break or detach, leaving the driver without reliable throttle control. On 2022 models, a steering coupling locking screw can loosen and fall out of the steering gear, causing a complete loss of steering. Across 2021–2024 models, the fuel pump can shut down without warning, cutting drive power while the vehicle is in motion.
Several 2021 model year issues affect occupant protection. Seats assembled incorrectly may not hold an occupant properly in a crash. The middle rear seatbelt buckle on five-passenger models can slip into the gap below the seat cushion and become unretrievable, leaving that position without a working restraint. A dashboard surface that is not properly bonded to its base can interfere with passenger airbag deployment. The rear window on 2021 vehicles may not be adequately bonded to the tailgate and can detach while driving, becoming a road hazard.
On 2022–2023 models, rear door window trim bars can detach at speed and create a hazard for following traffic. The 2021–2022 model years share this same trim bar issue. The 2021 model year also has a backup camera that can display a black screen or reboot on startup, reducing rear visibility, and LED headlights that may have been set to an incorrect angle during a prior repair, reducing forward visibility at night. The emergency call system, which contacts responders after a crash, can fail on 2021–2022 vehicles, either sending responders to the wrong location or failing to connect at all. On 2021 models, interior switch illumination can fail, making controls harder to locate while driving.
