Mercedes-Benz E 400 Recalls

The Mercedes-Benz E 400 has 13 recalls, all affecting the 2018 model year, with the most serious being a steering coupling that may not have been properly locked, allowing the mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the steering rack to come loose and reduce or eliminate steering control.

A separate steering recall covers the rack itself on 2018 rear-wheel-drive Coupe and Cabrio variants, where an internal defect can also compromise steering response. On the occupant protection side, front seatbacks on 2018 Coupe and Cabrio models can fail to lock properly and fold forward in a crash, and seat belt pretensioners along with the pre-crash tensioning system may not deploy when needed. The 2018 Cabrio specifically has an ISOFIX child seat anchor that can partially pull away from the body in a crash, reducing the restraint's ability to hold a child seat. On 2018 4Matic variants, the passenger seat sensor may not correctly identify a child seat in the front passenger position, leaving the front airbag active when it should be suppressed.

The 2018 E400 4Matic Wagon has a rear spoiler that can detach at speed and become a road hazard. Tires on 2018 Coupe and Cabrio models were marked with an incorrect maximum inflation pressure, and tires inflated to that stated pressure may lack sufficient strength and can fail while driving.

Two separate recalls cover the emergency call system on 2018 models: one where the system can dispatch responders to the wrong location, and another where the system can fail entirely and prevent contact with emergency services after a crash. The rearview camera on 2018 models can stop displaying an image due to a software error. On vehicles where the instrument cluster has been replaced, a software issue can disable the seatbelt reminder chime and warning light for front seat occupants.
