The Mercury Marquis has 3 recalls spanning 1974 to 1981, all affecting police or specialty-equipped vehicles, with the most serious being a 1981 police package issue where undersized rear suspension control arms can crack and break, allowing the rear axle to shift and cause sudden loss of vehicle control. The 1979 police package is subject to a separate suspension concern: inadequately welded frame crossmember assemblies can develop cracks that spread to the front suspension lower arm attachment points, allowing the lower arm to separate from the frame entirely and removing steering and handling geometry. On 1974 models equipped with the 400 cubic inch engine and either air conditioning or the police package, the five-blade engine cooling fan can develop fatigue cracks in the blades and shed fragments that can damage underhood components or injure anyone working near the engine.
