The Mercury Marquis has 3 recalls covering 1974 through 1981 model years, the most serious being a rear suspension control arm defect on 1981 police package vehicles where the arms can develop fatigue cracks and break, allowing the rear axle to shift and causing sudden loss of vehicle control.
The 1979 police-package model has a separate structural concern: frame crossmember welds can be incomplete, allowing cracks to spread into the front suspension lower arm attachment points. If the gusset separates from the frame, the front suspension lower arm can disengage entirely. Going back further, 1974 models equipped with the 400 cubic inch engine and either air conditioning or the police package have flexible five-blade cooling fans that can develop fatigue cracks in the blades, allowing fragments to break free and strike underhood components or injure anyone working in the engine bay.
