The Mercury Meteor has 4 recalls spanning the 1975-1979 production run, with the most serious being a 1979 steering shaft defect where loose or missing retaining pins in the flexible coupling can cause partial or complete loss of steering control while driving.
The 1975 model year has a brake pedal pivot bolt that may not have been tightened to the correct torque at assembly, which can leave the driver unable to apply the brakes. On 1979 models, the windshield wiper and washer circuit uses an undersized circuit breaker that can trip under heavy electrical load and shut the wipers off while driving in rain. Also on 1979 sedans and station wagons, the tail lamp and backup lamp bulb sockets may be the wrong length, causing those lights to work intermittently or not at all, reducing visibility to other drivers.
