The Mercury Mystique has 7 recalls spanning the 1995-1999 production run, with the most serious being a fuel filler pipe weld or reinforcement that can leak fuel on 1995 models, creating a fire risk whenever an ignition source is nearby.

The 1995 recall covers two related fuel system issues: the filler pipe's spin-welded reinforcement joint and the filler opening reinforcement integrated into the tank assembly can both allow fuel to escape and reach an ignition source. On 1996 models, a separate fuel filler vent hose can become brittle and crack over time, leaking fuel during fill-ups and raising the same fire risk. The 1996 model year also has a brake concern where the pressure-reducing valves in the rear brakes can corrode in high-salt-use regions, causing both rear wheels to lock under braking and destabilizing the vehicle. The 1998 model year has an accelerator cable that can develop a burr inside the sleeve, fraying the cable and preventing the throttle from returning to idle when the pedal is released. Rounding out the 1999 model year, the rear fuel lines can seep fuel at the junction between the metal line and nylon tube near the fuel filter, resulting in evaporative emissions beyond the allowable standard. There is also a 1999 compliance issue where the ignition key can be turned to the lock position and removed while the transmission is not in park, potentially allowing the vehicle to roll.
