The Pontiac Aztek has 3 recalls covering the 2001 and 2004 model years, with the most serious being a fuel tank weld defect on 2004 models where the inlet valve can separate from the tank, allowing fuel to leak onto the ground and potentially ignite if an ignition source is nearby.
The 2004 model year also has an ignition relay recall where contamination on the relay contacts creates high electrical resistance, causing intermittent engine stalls that can leave the vehicle unable to restart immediately, raising the risk of a crash. On 2001 all-wheel-drive models, water and road salt can work past the rear ball joint seals in cold weather and on rough roads, degrading the joint over time.
