Summary
The Porsche 944 has 5 recalls spanning the 1985–1991 production run, with the most serious being a high-pressure fuel hose on 1985 models that can harden over time, crack at its fittings, and leak fuel onto the exhaust system, where it can ignite and start an engine compartment fire.
The 1985 model year carries two other recalls as well. A separate fuel supply hose connecting to the pressure damper can develop a leak at its crimped fitting, causing fuel pressure to drop and the engine to stall unexpectedly in traffic. Also on 1985 vehicles equipped with cruise control, the throttle linkage can bind due to tight clearance at the metal bushing and insufficient lubrication, leaving the accelerator pedal stuck in the pressed-down position when the system is active. On 1988 models, front suspension control arms bearing the identification code "SM" can crack and break without warning while driving, causing sudden loss of steering and vehicle control. The 1991 model year has a plastic cowl cover at the base of the windshield that was not sealed to the body at the factory, allowing water to reach the wiper motor, corrode it internally, and cause wiper failure in wet weather.
