23 recalls across 5 model years
The Rivian R1S has 23 recalls covering 2022 through 2026 model years, with the most serious being a loose front upper control arm fastener on 2022 vehicles where the steering knuckle can separate from the control arm, causing sudden and complete loss of vehicle control.
The 2025 model year has a notable electrical issue where an improperly grounded connection inside the high-voltage distribution box can cut drive power without warning while the vehicle is moving. Also on 2025 models, the Hands-Free Highway Assist software can fail to detect a vehicle ahead, removing the automatic braking response a driver might be relying on. Lighting problems affect 2025 vehicles as well: low beams can fail to come on in cold weather, and one or both front turn signals can fail to illuminate, leaving other drivers without warning of a lane change or turn. A software feature called Car Costume, which controls exterior light animations, can inadvertently disable exterior lights on 2025 models, reducing the vehicle's visibility to others at night.
Seat belt and airbag hardware issues run across a wide span of model years. On 2022 through 2026 vehicles, the bolts securing the second-row seat belt retractors may be undertightened, which can allow the belt to pull free in a crash. Front seat belt anchor bolts on 2022 through 2025 models may also be improperly installed, with the same result. On 2022 models specifically, the front seat belt anchors may be inadequately attached to the B-pillar, and a faulty sensor in the front passenger seat belt system can cause the airbag to suppress or deploy incorrectly. Side curtain airbag fasteners on 2022 through 2023 models may be loose, preventing the bags from deploying properly in a side impact. On 2022 through 2024 vehicles that have had prior service work, damaged trim panel clips on the B-pillar or C-pillar can interfere with side curtain airbag deployment.
Suspension integrity is a concern on 2022 through 2025 vehicles that have had service performed: the toe link can be reassembled incorrectly, and if the joint separates, the vehicle can lose directional stability. On 2022 models, the accelerator pedal can fail to register when the driver lifts off, preventing the auto-hold and park functions from engaging and leaving the vehicle free to roll.
Going back to 2023 and 2024 production, headlights on those model years can be aimed too low or too high from the factory, reducing road illumination at night. On 2022 through 2023 models, a software update can disable the windshield defroster and defogger controls, cutting visibility in cold or humid conditions. The reverse lights on 2022 through 2023 vehicles have a visibility angle that falls short of lighting standards, making the vehicle harder to see when backing up. Compliance-related issues on 2024 models include a missing airbag warning label on the dashboard, and 2022 through 2023 vehicles may carry an incorrect maximum load weight on the tire placard. On 2025 models, the steering column control module may be missing cruise control markings, leaving the driver without a clear way to operate that system.
