The 2008 Subaru Outback has 7 recalls, the most urgent being five separate filings covering the front passenger airbag inflator, which can rupture and send metal fragments into the cabin, causing serious injury or death.
The airbag inflator issue has been the subject of multiple recall campaigns, and prior repair attempts did not fully resolve the problem for all affected vehicles. If your Outback has not had this work completed, or if you are unsure, checking your VIN against the open recalls is worth doing. On the electrical side, vehicles with turbocharged engines have a relay that can fail and leave the secondary air injection pump running continuously until it overheats and melts, raising the risk of an engine compartment fire. There is also a concern with the ignition switch: if a replacement mechanical key switch was installed, a small spring inside can break and weaken the switch, causing the engine to shut off unexpectedly while driving and preventing the airbags from deploying if a crash follows.
