The 2021 Subaru Outback has 4 recalls, the most serious involving the transmission: a loose cable nut can cause the gear selector to stop working correctly, and a software error in the transmission control unit can allow the drive chain to slip and break, both of which can result in loss of drive power and raise the risk of a crash.
On the safety equipment side, a capacitor in the front passenger seat sensor can crack and short circuit, preventing the passenger airbag from deploying in a crash. There is also a transmission-related concern where water can enter the inhibitor switch and cause it to fail, knocking out the reverse lights and the rearview camera image when backing up.
