The 2012 Subaru WRX has 11 recalls, the most serious being a defective passenger frontal airbag inflator that can explode and send sharp metal fragments into the cabin, potentially injuring or killing occupants.
Prior repair attempts did not fully resolve this issue, and multiple campaigns address it across different vehicle populations, including a targeted filing for vehicles registered in high-humidity states and territories. On the electrical side, replacement mechanical key ignition switches may have a broken internal spring that weakens the switch, allowing the engine to shut off unexpectedly while driving and preventing airbag deployment in a crash. Brake reliability is also a concern: corroding brake lines can leak hydraulic fluid, extending stopping distances and raising the risk of a crash. There is also a brake light switch issue where the brake lights may fail to illuminate when slowing or stopping, leaving following drivers without warning.
