3 recalls across 3 model years
The Subaru XT6 has 3 recalls covering the full 1988–1990 production run, with the most serious being a power steering system malfunction on 1990 models where the electric motor pump can fail intermittently, causing the steering to suddenly demand much more effort and raising the risk of losing control.
The 1988 model year has a related power steering issue: the electric pump can cut out without warning, and when assist returns abruptly after an absence, the sudden change in steering feel can cause the driver to overcorrect. On 1989 all-wheel-drive models with a manual transmission, frost can form at the transmission dipstick's breather point in cold and humid conditions, allowing pressure to build inside the transmission case and push out the oil seal, which can lead to fluid loss.
