The Suzuki Vitara has 3 recalls across the 1999-2002 production run, with the most serious affecting 2002 models equipped with the 2.0L engine, where the accelerator pedal can stick and fail to return to idle after releasing the throttle. On 1999 models, a brake lamp switch can fail to activate when the brake pedal is pressed, leaving brake lights dark and giving no warning to following drivers. Also on the 1999 model year, vehicles fitted with the 1.6L engine were assigned the same VIN prefix as 2.0L models, meaning the VIN does not correctly identify which engine the vehicle carries.
