The Toyota Cargo Van has 2 recalls, both affecting steering control: 1984 models with power steering have a centre arm that can crack and break, causing sudden loss of steering, while 1986 models have a bevel gear assembly that corrodes and makes steering increasingly stiff until it fails unpredictably. On 1984 power-steering-equipped vehicles, the steering centre arm is vulnerable to cracking when the wheel is turned repeatedly while the van is stationary, a common maneuver during parking or tight turns. If the arm breaks completely, the driver loses the ability to steer. On 1986 models, corrosion inside the bevel gear assembly gradually increases steering effort over time, eventually causing the steering to behave erratically or stop responding reliably.
