21 recalls across 7 model years
The Toyota Supra has 21 recalls spanning 1992 through 2023, with the most serious recent issue affecting 2023 models where incorrectly installed wheel lock bolts can damage hub threads, allow bolts to loosen and fall out, and cause a wheel to separate from the vehicle while driving.
The 2023 model year also has a transmission control unit defect where oil can leak into the unit, seize the transmission gears, and cause a sudden loss of drive power. On the fire risk side, 2021-2023 models are subject to a starter assembly defect where the starter can overheat and ignite a fire. The 2022 model year has a separate starter manufacturing issue with the same overheating and fire consequence. For 2021 models with the 2.0-liter engine, water can enter the starter relay, corrode it, cause a short circuit, and start a fire even while the vehicle is parked and off.
The 2020-2021 model years carry a fuel tank weld defect where the seam between the two tank halves can fail and leak fuel, creating a fire risk near any ignition source. The 2020 model year alone has a notable concentration of issues. A tie rod can fracture under high heat or rough road conditions, affecting steering control. A software problem can damage the vacuum pump during engine start and reduce brake assist, requiring more pedal force to stop. The driver's seat belt guide loop mount may have been improperly welded and can fail in a crash, leaving the belt unable to restrain the driver. Headlights can fail entirely due to a faulty control unit, and separately, headlight adjustment plugs were not properly installed at the factory, allowing horizontal aim that can blind oncoming drivers. The 2020 rearview camera can also retain a previously adjusted low-brightness, high-contrast setting on startup, making the backup image difficult to read.
The 2021 model year has a seat belt retractor that may not function correctly in a crash, reducing restraint effectiveness. Going back to 1997-1998 models, the driver airbag inflator can rupture during deployment and send metal fragments into the cabin. The 1992 model has a compliance-only label issue with no safety consequence.
