The Volkswagen e-Golf has 3 recalls across the 2015–2018 model years, with the most serious affecting 2015–2016 vehicles where oversensitive battery management software can falsely detect an electrical surge and shut down the drive motor without warning, raising the risk of a crash. The 2016–2018 model years have a separate safety issue where the airbags and seatbelt pretensioners can fail to deploy or activate correctly in a crash, leaving occupants without full restraint protection. On 2018 models specifically, front headrests can be built with defective guide sleeves that prevent the headrest from locking in place, allowing it to come loose in a crash and increasing the risk of head and neck injury.
