The Volvo ACL has 3 recalls spanning the 1995-1999 model years, with the most serious being a 1997 recall where the front steer axle upper steering arm can fail without warning, leaving the driver unable to control the vehicle's direction. The 1999 model year has a separate steering concern: the steering assist cylinder ball stud can separate from its socket due to wear, causing the steering to become suddenly heavy and difficult to turn. On 1995 models, the rear axle of the tandem axle set can have inoperable brakes on one or both wheels due to incorrectly installed brake S-cams, which extends stopping distances and raises the risk of a crash.
